0 0

If the FINA Bureau accept the dates, the 2017 FINA Masters World Championships will start exactly this day next year!

Organisers are waiting at least 15 thousand participants

If the members of the FINA Bureau accept the dates, the 2017 FINA Masters World Championships will start this day next year. The host city is going to be Budapest and Balatonfüred, as the 2017 FINA World Championships (14th July -31st July 2017). At least 15 thousand of retired sportsmen- and women can be expected as participants at the Masters Championships. In addition to this number relatives, fans and helpmates will travel to Budapest and Balatonfüred. The number of participant and guests can be over 25 thousand together.

The challenge will not be smaller at the Masters World Championships then at the FINA World Championships, which is going to be the biggest sports event in Hungary ever.

The Media Team of the Bp2017 LLC. starts the count- down with some prognosis for the Championships  next year!

Enthusiastic Hungarian swimmers are already preparing for the FINA Masters

Hungarian senior swimmers are already preparing for next year’s FINA Masters World Championships. Dr Norbert Nagy, president of the Hungarian Senior Swimming Federation said almost all their athletes who have taken part in recent big events, will also compete in Budapest and Balatonfüred. Their number will be, however, even larger.

„More and more people are registering to swimming clubs, and this is due to the FINA Masters WCH. FINA requires official, authenticated results and that’s why they need to join one of the clubs. Our federation have nearly 1000 registered members, and I can proudly declare that three-fourths of them want to compete in the WCH” – the president said.

„A 96 year-old man, Béla Bánki Horváth is a regular participant in the masters events, and he plans to compete in Budapest, too. I could mention some younger swimmers as well, like Csilla Csikány, Dianna Szokol, András Sömek or Levente Nagy-Pál. They can guarantee that Hungary will win plenty of medals in the WCH, because we are used to success.”

Water polo heroes in the FINA Masters

Margaret Island can be the scene of the best senior masters water polo tournament ever in the 2017 FINA Masters World Championships. Plenty of former big stars (both women and men) are planning to take part in the event. Former world and European champion Katalin Rédei and a couple of her former team-mates of the successful Hungarian national team of the 90’s and the 2000’s already showed themselves in the 2013 Masters European Championship in Budapest, and they would like to relive the experience.

„I finished my professional career in 2004, but I am still playing water polo in the second division team of BVSC. As I heard there will be a lot of teams in the WCH, so it will not be easy to get a good result” – Rédei said.

Besides her the crowd will have the chance to see among others Orsolya Szalkay, Ildikó Sós, Ágnes Primász and Laura Gruber in the pool.

„These senior matches are often more entertaining than those of the professional teams. We love water polo, so we enjoy every moment in the water. Of course there are some clashes during the matches, but is normal. It is water polo, not chess…”

Family days in the 2017 FINA Masters

The 2017 FINA Masters World Championships will offer nice experience for the athletes and the crowd, but also the chance for families to spend a great time in Hungary next year. The Győri family will be represented by two competitors in the water: János is an experienced masters water polo player: he and his team, the „Happy Hippos” won gold in the 2013 Masters European Championship in Budapest, and they want to repeat it in 2017.

His daughter, Júlia is a former professional synchronized swimmer, who is planning to compete in duet with Julia Kiss.

„The family has become more important for me in recent years. Shortly after I had finished my professional career I did not even want to see any water, but after a while I started to miss it, and I am looking forward to take part in the FINA Masters” – Júlia Győri said.

„The 2006 and the 2010 European Championships remain memorable for me forever, since both were held in Budapest, in front of a fantastic home crowd. We were competing also in the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, but a domestic event is quite different.”

American invasion to be expected in the 2017 FINA Masters WCH

American athletes will likely take part in large numbers in next year’s FINA Masters World Championships in Hungary. Mel Goldstein, American vice-chairman of the FINA Masters Committee said: the delegation will consist mainly of swimmers and water polo players. Goldstein estimates the number of the American participants around 1500, but it can reach 4 or 5000 as well including the attenders and family members.

Former great water polo player and Hall of Fame member Andy Burke is sure there will be even more American teams in the Masters WCH than usual, since Budapest seems to be a very popular scene.

„I am sure you realize that going to Budapest to play in the pools at the Margaret Island is like a pilgrimage to Mecca for us” – Burke said.

„Participation in the FINA World Masters in water polo for the US has been primarily with three major clubs, The Olympic Club, Santa Barbara and KAOS. In addition Newport WPC has been to several Worlds, plus a couple of other individual teams.   Each of these teams have been serious about their participation and between them they have won many medals.”

„The main spirit in masters water polo is the ability to play against teams from other parts of the world where the athletes play the sport because they love it, and appreciate the opportunity to play and meet, athletes from all over the world. The attendance will most likely vary due to the location of the Masters Worlds. Budapest is a great destination for water polo people.”
