The cardiologist- professor feels at home in the swimming pool, because he learned to swim at age 3 in the Spartacus SC, started to play water-polo at the age of 7 in the KSI SC. He still plays in the water polo team of the university and can just hardly imagine his life, without two amateur games weekly.

You can just hardly find a professional swimmer who has not been checked in the Heart and Vascular Centre in the „Városmajor”. It is not surprising, that Tamás Gyárfás -president of the Hungarian Swimming Federation, asked Béla Merkely Dr. – who is Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs of the Semmelweis University-  to be the doctor of the National Swim- Team at the Olympic Games.

It is clear for him, he needs to be in the best shape in Rio, because he has to be available not just during the competitions, but the trainings and in the Olympic Village as well.

I would be happy, if my look could be very similar to a sportsmen, but it is just a dream, I know, but I am good in the long shifts!I have already been in Rio, South America is always feels like home for me, because my mother was born in Bolivia.

He is the only one in the Olympic team, who represents the “cardiology discipline”.

We have made a lot of comparable- analyse in the Heart and Vascular Centre, and it was well marked, that swimmers, water polo players and kayak canoeing sportsmen-and women can mobilise high amount of energy when the oxygen consumption is close to the maximal. If the heart cannot transfer the blood to the muscles fast enough, the problem is huge then! Cardiology can really help to avoid such situations!

It is always refreshing for the Professor to meet sportsmen and sportswomen, to experience their positive thoughts, and their self-confidence. It helps to relax!

I will have a huge role nearby the water next year as well! I am really proud to be asked for the position to be the head of the medical service at the 2017 World Championships. Team members are going to be medical specialists, nurses, medical students and doctors. We have already registered 150 volunteers, and we are working on to have at least 40 doctors, and nurses on our side.
