Tamás Faragó is convinced Hungary will be a great host of the 2017 FINA World Championships. The former olympic, world and European champion water polo player didn’t have the chance to take part in a world champs in front of a home crowd as a player and later as a coach.
„I won the gold medal with the Hungarian team in Belgrade back in 1973, but for the members of the current team the fanatic Hungarian crowd will give extra motivation. This is the most important sport event in the world after the football world cup and the olympic games” – the legendary athlete said.
Faragó became head coach of the Hungarian women’s water polo team in 2000, and he won gold with them in the European Championships in Budapest a year later.
„Hungarian female water polo players had been very talented before that as well, but they needed something more in order to become big champions. Thanks God I managed to help them reach that, which is a fantastic memory for me. In 2005 we also won the world championships, but very far away, in Montreal…”
Faragó thinks in this year’s olympic games the quarter-final will be a really decisive match for both the men’s and the women’s team.
„If they go through, then the gold medal will be a realistic goal for them. The world champs in Budapest will be, tougher, however. There will be thousands of home fans in every match, the pressure will be on the players, but no question they have to go for gold, that’s the only result the Hungarian crowd accept.”
