Men’s water polo: tournament victory by Hungary and Italy before the World Championships
Home team of the 17th FINA World Championships finished in the first place at BENU Cup while Olympic bronze medallist Italy won the Six Nation Cup in Siracusa.
After winning the Samartzidis Cup in Athens, Hungarian men’s national team finished in the top again, this time in front of home crowd. The difference between the two victories is that in Greece they played against World Championships participant teams only (Canada, Montenegro, Greece and Spain) and they remained unbeaten.
During the BENU Cup only Canadians represented the World Championships beside Hungary. Home team won against all its opponents, Canada (17-4), Germany (15-9) and Romania (15-9). It means Hungary remained unbeaten during the preparation time before the World Championships.
Meanwhile the Italian Federation organized a pretty strong tournament in Siracusa. The Six Nation Cup was finally won by the home team. Alessandro Campagna could be satisfied, his team beat Greece by 4, Russia by 6 and Croatia by 3 goals in the final. Croatian team lacked one of its best players, Sandro Sukno.
