Olympic world and European boxing champion is to take a new role at the World Championships. He will be a TV commentator for the events staged in Balatonfüred. The new role does not replace sport in his life: he is preparing for Ironman.
István Kovács is getting acquainted with his new role. Olympic, world and European boxing champion told he has been to major international events as an athlete or sport director so far, now he will attend the 17th FINA World Championships as a TV commentator and fan.
„We Hungarians shall get used to hosting top athletes of the world, including several Hungarian ones. So far the events have been conducted successfully, venues are amazing” –Kokó told. Kovács admitted he had learnt to swim only a few years ago for the sake of his plans with triathlon and having learnt to swim he respects swimmers even more. He was not hanging around after the first competition day but ran 30 kilometres.
„I have 2 weeks before the big day. Ironman triathlon will take place in Nagyatád and according to my training plan I had to do 30 km running on Saturday. Back and forth between Balatonfüred and Balatonalmádi Hungarian swimmers racing on the first day came to my mind quite a lot of times and I though how easy it was for me in the fresh air, in contrast with oxygen deprived swimmers fighting each other under the water. In fact, I drew strength from their struggles” – told the former boxing icon who will follow open water events in Balatonfüred as an M4 TV commentator.
