Gergő Zalánki is the surprise man in the Hungarian olympic water polo team. Former world class player Tibor Benedek, now head coach of the national team decided to go to Rio with only two left-handed players instead of three. That means two-time olympic champion Norbert Madaras has been left out of the squad, but 21-year-old Zalánki is member of the team.
„A couple months ago I was just dreaming of the olympics, but now it is the reality! I had some good matches in the qualification tournament in Trieste, and I was in good form in the Hungarian championship playoff with Eger as well. Tibor Benedek said after the World League match against Romania that I played very well, but he expected a similar attitude from me during the preparation for the olympic games, too” – Zalánki said.
Gergő Zalánki is one of the most talented Hungarian water polo players. He won gold in the 2015 Universiade, and silver both in the 2013 Junior World Championships and in the 2014 Junior European Championship. He debuted in the national team last year, and is now heading to the olympics in Rio!
„I have always wanted to move forward step by step. I am thinking the same way regarding the olympic games as well. First we have to perform well in the group stage, then in the quarter-final, in the semi-final, and then…we shall see…”
