China won 10 gold medals out of 13 at the 2015 FINA World Championships and 7 out of 8 at the Rio Olympics in diving, so the dominance of the Asian country is unquestionable in this sport. Chen Aisen is only 21, but he is already a world and two-time Olympic champion, so he can be a real diving star in the coming years.

Tan Jingyu was looking for potential athletes in a primary school in Guangzhou in the early 2000’s. The Chinese diving coach selected a young boy, and he decided to make him world and Olympic champion! That is how the story of Chen Aisen began.

Chen’s first notable achievement was winning the gold medal at age 14 with Chang Yanquan in 10m synchro at the 2009 East Asian Games in Hong Kong.

In 2013, Chen Aisen won three gold medals at the FINA Diving World Series in 10m synchro with Lin Yue in Moscow, Dubai and Beijing. He was also silver medallist in the individual events in Beijing and Dubai.

In 2014 he won both in the individual 10m platform event and in the 10m synchro one leg each at the FINA Diving World Series. He and Lin won the 10m synchro competition at the Asian Games as well, and he finished first in the team’s event at the FINA World Cup in Shanghai.

In 2015, Chen was partnered with Lin Yue and won the 10m synchro at the FINA World Championships in Kazan. Chen won a total of six gold medals at the FINA Diving World Series.

2016 turned to be a very special year for Chen, since he proved almost unbeatable both in the 10m synchro and the individual 10m platform. He won both events at the Rio Olympics, the individual title was of really high value since China had not won it since the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, when Hu Jia finished in first place.

Chen and Lin won four gold medals in 10m synchro at the FINA World Series. Chen added three more gold medals in the individual events. It was no surprise that in 2016 he was presented with the FINA Male Diver of the Year Award.

The final of the men’s 10m synchro will take place on 17 July, and the final of the men’s 10m platform on 22 July in the Dagály Swimming Complex in Budapest at the FINA World Championships.
