Sharon van Rouwendaal from the Netherlands won the gold medal in the women’s 10 km open water swimming competition in Rio.

Sharon van Rouwendaal from the Netherlands won the gold medal in the women’s 10 km open water swimming competition in Rio, ahead of Rachele Bruni from Italy and Poliana Okimoto from Brazil. Aurelie Muller from France, who originally finished second, was disqualified.

Reigning champion Hungarian, Éva Risztov came 13th, her compatriot Anna Olasz 14th.

„Number 13 at the start list has not brought luck for Éva” – György Turi, leader of Risztov’s club, Kőbánya SC said. „She fought hard, she tried everything, but could not change her rhythm like the rivals did at 7.5 km. She had a good time in the end, but it was not enough for more” – Turi added.
